Science (Core and Optional)

SEPARATE SCIENCE

Exam board: AQA

Course: Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSE (‘triple’ award – worth 3 GCSEs)

Students with a particular interest and aptitude for science have the option of being entered for the three separate science GCSEs by selecting this as one of their option courses. All applications will be discussed within the science team and final decisions regarding suitability for the course will be made on the basis of current academic progress and effort in lessons.

On this route students will have 14 lessons a fortnight, designated as biology, chemistry or physics lessons, taught by three subject specialists.

Biology:

  • Cell biology
  • Organisation
  • Infection and response
  • Bioenergetics
  • Homeostasis and response
  • Inheritance, variation and evolution
  • Ecology

Chemistry:

  • Atomic structure and the periodic table
  • Bonding, structure and the properties of matter
  • Quantitative chemistry
  • Chemical changes
  • Energy changes
  • The rate and extent of chemical change
  • Organic chemistry
  • Chemical analysis
  • Chemistry of the atmosphere
  • Using resources

Physics:

  • Forces
  • Energy
  • Waves
  • Electricity
  • Magnetism and electromagnetism
  • Particle model of matter
  • Atomic structure
  • Space physics

At the end of year 11 students will complete 6 written exam papers, two in each of the sciences, each 1 hour and 45 minutes in length. In place of coursework students will complete a number of exam board set required practicals which could be examined in the written papers. Good attendance is therefore important as it would be difficult to independently catch up on any of these practicals should they be missed.

At the end of the course students will be awarded 3 GCSE grades.
