Physical Education (Core)

Years 9-11 (Key Stages 3 & 4)

In years 9, 10 and 11, students follow a variety of sports from a programme which is designed to be in line with the National Curriculum requirements at Key Stages 3 and 4.

In years 9 and 10, students follow a programme of eight activities covering games, outdoor adventurous activities and health and fitness areas.

In the summer term, athletics, striking/fielding and net/wall activities are offered.

In year 11, students follow a programme of six activity areas, including games, outdoor adventurous activities, health and fitness and alternative games.  The students will focus more on the following aspects in these lessons:

  • Improving personal performance
  • Coaching
  • Officiating/organising/leading
  • Health and fitness

Students will be expected to gain a more in-depth understanding of a range of activities so that they can participate to the best of their abilities.

Finally, opportunities to participate in extra-curricular clubs, local clubs and organisations will be addressed in order to promote healthy leisure choices beyond school.

We are all aware of the benefits of physical activity in developing a good level of health and fitness by promoting an active lifestyle.  We also try to put across how physical activity can provide enjoyment within a social setting.  With the increased amount of leisure time that everyone will experience in the future, our hope is that students will gain enough knowledge, expertise and enjoyment from some of the activities chosen to become lifetime participants.
