Why Study Child Development?

In addition to helping students acquire the relevant subject knowledge, our specification:

Outline of the Course:

This qualification is for students who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in child development. It is designed with both practical and theoretical elements that will prepare students for further qualifications in child care, health and social care, psychology, sociology and biology.

All students will study the following 3 mandatory topics:

    • R018: Health and Well-Being for Child Development
    • R019: Understanding the Equipment and Nutritional Needs of Children from Birth to Five Years
    • R020: Understanding the Development Norms of a Child from Birth to Five Years

Study Implications:

This course is constantly being updated as new medical procedures and theories are introduced. Students need to read and research topical issues from magazines, newspapers and television programmes.

Students will have the opportunity to care for the ‘infant simulator’ baby if they choose to follow this course, which, although not a prerequisite of the criteria, does give the candidate an insight into the issues around raising a child. This course is not just about how to care for a baby, but is a practical and theoretical study of how children grow and develop involving analytical observation of children from conception to the age of 6 years.

Assessment Method

Assessment is split over the 3 mandatory units:

    • R018: Health and Wellbeing for Child Development – written paper; OCR set and marked; 1 hour 15 minutes; 80 marks.
    • R019: Understanding the Equipment and Nutritional Needs of Children from Birth to Five Years – centre assessed tasks; OCR moderated; approximately 7-10 hours; 60 marks.
    • R020: Understanding the Development Norms of a Child from Birth to Five Years – OCR moderated; approximately 7-10 hours; 60 marks.

What can I do with a Child Development Qualification?

You may wish to do a qualification in child development for its own sake, perhaps to form the basis of a future interest. Or you might wish to go into a job where it is useful to have had experience of child development, food preparation and nutrition, or where you will need to use some of the skills developed during this course. These might include careers in such fields as nursing, teaching, childcare, research and development and healthcare. Whichever you choose, the study of childcare can help you develop transferable skills which you can take into any career or job.
