Outline of the Course

This course enables students to develop and build upon their mathematical skills and knowledge in anticipation that they will reach their full potential.

Syllabus Content

Higher/Foundation Tier

The syllabus content is determined by the National Curriculum. It includes various aspects of number, algebra, shape, space, measures and data handling. It also encourages students to use and apply their knowledge of mathematics.

Students achieve a grade ranging from 1 to 9. Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5 while higher tier grades cover 4 to 9.

Students commence the GCSE programme of study in year 9.

There will be one double maths group for the most able students. These students will have started the GCSE maths course in September of year 9 alongside the GSCE further maths course with the intention of sitting both examinations at the end of year 11.

As the GCSE examination is offered at 2 tiers each student is entered for the most appropriate exam based on a number of factors including end of year 11 targets. Both higher and foundation tiers follow a linear syllabus and examinations take place at the end of year 11.

Assessment Method

Internal assessment: a series of assessment tests, homework assignments and the normal school examinations.

External assessment: three written examinations - 1½ hours each.

The written examinations will take place in year 11. There will be a non-calculator paper worth 1/3 and 2 calculator papers worth 1/3 each of the final grade.

Study Implications/Requirements

Homework will be set at least once a fortnight, where appropriate. It can consist of worksheets, revision, mymaths tasks, etc.

Each student should have the following equipment:

Ruler (graded in centimetres and millimetres)
Pair of Compasses
HB pencil/black pen/eraser

What can I do with a maths qualification?

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems.

It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

You will develop a wide range of mathematical communication skills as well as improving your ability to work with others, to analyse and solve problems and to take charge of your own learning. You should also be able to develop your ICT capabilities. These are all important transferable skills that every employer looks for.

A good grade at GCSE will help you to move on to study A level or vocational A level courses, or a job of your choice.
