Science

The Science Department at Sharnbrook Upper School has been a centre of academic excellence and learning innovation for many years – and the tradition continues! Our results at GCSE and A level speak volumes, reflecting the commitment of our students and of the highly qualified and enthusiastic teaching and non-teaching staff. We have a strong commitment to teacher training and professional development, having trained several of our own staff through the Graduate Trainee Program. The Department is very well equipped for experimental work and has a vibrant prep room with seven technicians. We have a mobile unit of 30 laptops, enabling data-logging in situ.

The Science Department has for many years enjoyed strong links to local industry, especially the Unilever research laboratories based nearby on the outskirts of the village. Collaborative links with other North Beds schools have been very strong, and with the establishment of the North Beds Schools Trust, further opportunities are on the horizon.

All students begin a novel three year GCSE program on entry in Year 9 and we offer five different learning routes, described in more detail by following the ‘…course details for GCSE science’ link. The diversity of routes allows us to cater better for the individual needs of all students. Additionally we offer a BTEC Animal Care first certificate course through the school option system in Years 10-11. (This is also described in detail by following the appropriate link.) Our growing Small Animal Care facility is enjoyed by the wider school and local community.

The number of students opting to take one or more of our AS and A level courses is extremely healthy. Although we happily accept onto these courses any student we feel is capable of gaining a grade E or better, many students consistently achieve superb results, some amongst the very best in the U.K.For more detail about each specific post-16 course, please follow the links.

We are very optimistic and enthusiastic about science education and believe this rubs off on our students!
