Welcome to the Mathematics Curriculum Area page. Mathematics We proudly boast that the summer 2008 exams for Mathematics have yielded our best ever results. 77% A*-C for the GCSE Modular Course with 100% pass rate overall 75% A*-C for ‘A’ level course, one of the most popular choices currently doing AS, A-Level and Further Maths We attribute our success to a large, well qualified and experienced contingent of both teaching and non-teaching staff working together and in close partnership with highly committed students and supportive parents. Moreover, being part of a training school, many of the mathematicians practising in the department are ‘home-grown’. The Mathematics department is not only capacious and well resourced, but each of the main classrooms is equipped with an INTERACTIVE WHITE BOARD synchronised to a PROJECTOR and operated through a dedicated COMPUTER that is networked with full ICT support. A conjoined ICT classroom is accessible by all students as an integral part of their course of Mathematics. Acting as a beacon of professionalism for the department, the Maths office is a vibrant forum where the debate of stimulating mathematical concepts and the development of novel approaches for teaching thrive in the pursuit of excellence. The department strives to remain at the forefront of new initiatives and changes to the curriculum. We have become a pilot school for the new Functional Skills qualification which contextualises the concepts learnt within the course by posing ‘real life’ problems. Beyond a well differentiated structure that supports the full range of ability from step papers to remedial maths, the success of students is ensured through continuous monitoring of progress towards their full ‘potential’ indicators coupled with innovative intervention strategies that involve peer mentoring, early entry groups and after school and Saturday revision classes. The pedagogical environment cultured throughout is one in which the student feels that they have a voice and can make a change.
