Ethics, Theology & Citizenship

He who asks a question is a fool for a minute.

He who does not, remains a fool forever.” – old Chinese proverb

We believe that, by following the programmes of study in ETC, students will be encouraged and enabled to explore, question and evaluate attitudes, values, beliefs and lifestyle choices.

ETC should foster a reflective approach to life, respect for self and others, and the development of personal beliefs and values. It should promote spiritual, physical, emotional, personal, cultural and social development, including health and well-being.

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” – Robert Byrne

Geography
The Geography Department consists of five enthusiastic members of staff who are passionate in their approach to teaching a subject that has never been more relevant than it is today. The subject is very popular with over fifty students following the course in Years 12 and 13. In Years 10 and 11, Geography is also one of the most popular optional subjects with more than one hundred and eighty students following the GCSE course.

At both GCSE and A level the subject attempts to achieve an understanding of the complex inter-relationships between people and their physical environment. It addresses the elements and processes that are specific to the study of contemporary problems and issues. Ranging from climate change to neo-colonialism in world trade, Geography tackles issues that matter and evaluates attempts to manage them. We have had many of our sixth form students go on to study Geography at universities across the country: Cambridge, UCL, Kings, Sheffield, Durham and Bristol are to name a few.

Fieldwork is a core element of the curriculum across the key stages, with students developing the skills associated with the collection, analysis and presentation of information. Fieldtrips in the department include studying urban sustainability in Cambridge, coastal pressures in Dorset and Somerset, urban rebranding for the London Olympics, physical systems at the IOE Earth Science Lab and geomorphic processes/hazards in Iceland.

History
'Who controls the past controls the future’ George Orwell 1949
The History Department has an established reputation at Sharnbrook of dedication to student learning and achievement. We pride ourselves in having experienced and specialist teachers who through a variety of teaching strategies, engage and motivate a wide and mixed ability cohort of students. The students who choose to join us at GCSE and AS, and stay with us at A2 have been motivated to do so by an interest in what we study, as well the mutual investment that teachers and students have placed in each other lower down the school. Studying History can be an intellectually enriching and rewarding experience.
Trips in the Department include a visit to Berlin (Germany) – Krakow (Poland) – Auschwitz Concentration Camp - Moscow and St Petersburg (Russia).
