Accounting

There are many ways of keeping accounts, including brown envelopes and shoe boxes! But the preferred method, used by every trained book-keeper and accountant throughout the world, is double entry.

Sharnbrook offers you the opportunity to learn the necessary accounting skills in interactive lessons taught by highly qualified professionals.  Once you have mastered this art, you will not only pass your AS and A2 exams, but…… you will be able to talk and understand the same language as your bank manager, accountant and tax inspector.

After all, you will need to for the rest of your life, whatever you end up doing.

Business Studies

The Business Education department is one of the largest of its kind in the country and has enjoyed recent success with 100% A-C grades in the Certificate in Financial Studies and 80% A-C pass rates in both Economics and Business at A-level - not to mention the excellent results attained across the suite of “business” subjects with the Leisure Department managing to produce outstanding value added scores, and both Law and Accounting achieving stunning results. Furthermore, prior to the summer, “Green Elephant” achieved success by reaching the National Finals of the Young Enterprise competition and won the prestigious award for the best marketing of all the finalists. The Year 9 Enterprise course continues to go from strength to strength with almost 180 students having access to this programme.

With the decision to introduce BTEC First Certificate this September and, currently, being only in the second cohort of the Diploma in Financial Studies, things never remain static within the department. Indeed, we are currently involved with the “gateway” application for a new diploma in Business Finance and Administration which we hope to launch in September 2010. Equally, as a new range of GCSE specifications are about to be launched from September 2009, we are giving serious consideration to the launch of GSCE Economics as an option for the first time.

If you have any questions at any time about the courses run within the department please feel free to contact btreverton@sharnbrook.beds.sch.uk for further details

Economics

Economics is the study of how people use all the resources available to make goods and services which satisfy their needs and wants. In doing this, it is necessary to assess some of the problems which arise from these activities. This involves an examination of inflation, unemployment, government policy, taxation, international trade, poverty and the operation of firms and markets. It will benefit anyone who has, or who wants to have, an interest in how the world is the way it is.

Law

"Even when laws have been written down, they ought not always to

 remain unaltered."    -     Aristotle

Law is a dynamic and conceptual subject which requires a study of the changes in social history and public expectation.

Do you know the meaning of “Ratio decidendi”, and “obiter dicta”?

Would you be able to apply them in a  considered and useful manner to a given set of facts?

Could you distinguish a case on its facts or consider the necessity for law reform in an objective manner?

Sharnbrook Law students can do all of these things!!

They debate, discuss case law and the merits of a common law system on a regular basis and, as a result, are objective, well read, informed and argumentative!!

The Law department is a successful way of introducing students to information they will need for life, many have gone on to study Law at university, whilst others use it to balance their studies in other subjects.

Leisure, Travel and Tourism

Leisure, Travel and Tourism is a well-established subject at Sharnbrook and is continuing to expand. The subject is taught by specialist staff in two dedicated rooms situated within the Sixth Form Centre, in one of which a new IT suite has just been installed.  Industry links have been strengthened and visits form a key part in the delivery of the Leisure and Tourism courses. Previous visits have included the Dorchester Hotel, the European Holiday and Travel show, and the filming of ‘Ready Steady Cook’ to name just a few.
