BTEC First Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Education)

Who is it for?

Students who are looking for a career in teaching or coaching PE and outdoor education. 

Students who are interested in outdoor and adventurous activities such as rock climbing and kayaking. 

Students who enjoy completing coursework and are good at meeting deadlines.

The BTEC First Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Education) is designed to give you an insight into the world of sport and outdoor education.  With focuses on leadership, anatomy and physiology, and health and wellbeing, the course gives you the tools to pursue a career in a wide variety of roles within sport.  Our unique application of the course through outdoor education is perfect for students who have interests outside of the traditional sporting activities and wish to develop and improve their skills in challenging environments.

Syllabus Content

There are 8 units to complete within the course:

Core Units

Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise (external exam)

Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance (external exam)

Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance

Specialist Units

Unit 4: The Sports Performer in Action

Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness

Unit 6: Leading Sports Activities

Unit 9: Lifestyle and Well-being

Unit 10: Injury and the Sports Performer

Assessment Method

On successful completion of the BTEC First Certificate students will be awarded 2 GCSEs.

The course consists of:

2 externally assessed exams

The attainment in which determines the overall possible attainment for the course.

6 coursework units

Assessed using a number of designated assignments.

Observations of performance and presentations are examples of assessment methods, however, there is a large component of written work required.

A final grade of Unclassified, Level 1 Pass (E), Level 2 Pass Pass (C/C), Level 2 Merit Pass (C/B), Level 2 Merit Merit (B/B), Level 2 Distinction Merit (A/B), Level 2 Distinction Distinction (A/A), Level 2 Distinction* Distinction (A*/A) or Level 2 Distinction* Distinction* (A*/A*) is decided by attainment in each unit.

Additional Costs

The course costs approximately £85 per year.  This price covers kit and equipment used for activities, travel to external venues, certificates of achievement and a course polo shirt

Extra Qualifications Gained

In addition to a BTEC qualification, I would expect hard-working students to gain many of the following proficiency awards by the end of year 11:

BCU Paddle Power Awards

British Canoe Union 1 Star Proficiency Award in Kayak and Canoe

National Indoor Climbing Award Levels 1 and 2

National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze

What can I do with an Outdoor Education Qualification?

The course has been developed to provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge to continue on to the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport (PE or OE), A level Physical Education, or it can be used as a GCSE towards your 6th form intake requirements.  It is also a useful course for those looking to leave and go into employment in the coaching and instructing sectors.
